Ombre Hair - Do or Don't?

I've been really grabbed by the look of the ombre hair, whether on permed or straight locks. But well, of course, those of you who know me would know blond hair wouldn't quite work on me and it'll require bleaching which I'm really against 'cause I don't wanna spoil my hair. Still, maybe I could create something similar, such as dark brown at the top and light brown at the ends...? Give me your opinions.
