Anyway, the biggest night of the music industry took place at the Staples Center, L.A. The Grammys 2011 saw many of music's famous stars and tons of gorgeous looks on the red carpet. Let's take a look.
The budding stars of Glee made their way through the photogs' flashbulbs looking their best in designer dresses and suits.
Leading actress Lea Michele showed off her sexy stems and cleavage with the high slit and plunging neckline of her black Emilio Pucci dress. The dress had plenty of details - ruffling on the cap-sleeves and tiered skirt, laced bodice giving us a peek of her midriff, so I wish she had worn her hair in an updo or semi-updo instead. Lea always wears her brunette locks down so I'm still searching for that outstanding look from her. A pair of stiletto pumps from Christian Louboutin completes her look, together with her pinkish red lips that served as her brightest accessory for the evening.
Lea's co-star, Dianna Agron disappointed me that night wearing a black ensemble by Vivienne Westwood. It wasn't so much that Dianna looked awful, but this look, to me, didn't bring out the best in her. The bustier-skirt combination has a little bit of edge in it, so it didn't suit Dianna's feminine style, though I would applaud her for taking the risk and experimenting with a different look from the usual. Besides, the skirt seemed to make her bottom look a little heavy.
However, it was interesting to see her stepping out in smoky-eyes and nude lips as well, something we don't see everyday. Not forgetting that Rihanna/Mary J. Blige-inspired hair-do, exposing her beautiful features. Good try, but I like Dianna going vintage, so this isn't my favourite look of hers. A pair of satin pumps finishes her outfit.
Mercedes aka Amber Riley, previously awarded Best Dressed on E!'s Fashion Police by Joan Rivers at the SAG Awards, wore a painted print silver dress by Ema Savahl. The edgy strapless metallic frock was matched with some detailed gold accessories i.e. a neck piece linked with a shoulder deco. I love that everything on Amber was unique and different from everybody else, but I didn't like how they don't seem to come together well on the whole. There's too much going on on her dress and accessories, not forgetting the clash in metallics. The gold piece should have been left at home, then her look would be perfect.
Jenna Ushkowitz flashed her best smile at the photographers wearing her Pamela Dennis dress matched with a Judith Leiber clutch. The Korean-American actress' frock is actually a nude strapless dress with black chiffon lace wrapped around it, finished with a huge bow. It's nice that Jenna kept the accessories to a mininum.
Then there was tons of glitter and shimmer this year. First up, Wizards of Waverly Place's Selena Gomez went with a champagne gold J. Mendel gown. Wearing her hair down, the actress completed her look with Lorraine Schwartz jewels. To be honest, I think this look was a little too mature for the 18-year old. I see Christina Aguilera in this outfit, not someone as young as Selena. And I prefer to see colour on Selena, this gown looks muted on her.
Selena's Disney rival Miley Cyrus also wore a floor-sweeping dress, but opted for the opposite end of the colour spectrum in a dark-coloured Roberto Cavalli sequinned number. I'm loving the hair, but not so much the dress. These two young adults should've adopted more fun looks and experimented with brights instead of these dresses which seem to add a couple of years to their age.
Beautiful Kim Kardashian was swanky in Kaufman Franco, displaying her hot bod in a cleavage- and legs-revealing gold halter gown. The dress was also bare-back, making Kim one of the most scantily-clad attendees at the Grammys this year. Finished off with a pair of nude Christian Louboutins, the outfit, together with matching highlights in Kim's hair, made the socialite look like a goddess.
Heidi Klum strolled the red carpet with her hubby Seal, who was a winner that night, taking home the trophy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for the song "Imagine". The model's dress kinda looked like a cross between Selena Gomez's and Kim K's looks with her Julien Macdonald pick for the night. But I prefer how Kim's dark hair contrasted against her gold gown, as compared to Heidi matching her blonde locks with the body-hugging dress.
Jennifer Lopez walked the red carpet with hubby Marc Anthony as she dazzled in her Emilio Pucci number. The long-sleeved minidress was covered in countless tiny metal plates, making the American Idol judge shine before the bright lights and camera flashbulbs. Spikey Christian Louboutins and a Swarovski crystal clutch adds on to the sparkle.
Katy Perry showed off some family love before the crowd as the "Thinking of You" singer brought her British comedian hubby Russell Brand as well as her 90-year old grandma. The trio was dressed by Giorgio Armani, as Katy's custom-made Armani Prive dress was made up of an embellished bra as a wrap skirt joined to a pair of angel wings on Katy's back. A pair of silver Casadei heels completed the look.
Snooki of MTV's Jersey Shore was spotted in a shimmery grey short dress. I didn't really like strong-shoulders look on her petite frame. It just made her look even smaller than she already is. The darkened hair and side-ponytail - definitely something nice to see on Snooki, but on the whole it's a pretty look on the reality TV star. 28-year old LeAnn Rimes walked the red carpet to the Grammys in a Reem Acra frock that features a sleeveless shoulder strap on one-side, and a cap-sleeve on the other. The dress had no volume at all, and I think it made LeAnn Rimes look skinnier than she actually is. And those satin shoes peeping out from from underneath? Ewww. I don't like this look at all. Probably one of my personal worst-dressed for the night.
Country singer Miranda Lambert wore a textured Edition by George Chakra dress on the red carpet. The bareback dress also had a cut-out shoulder strap, giving the dress an interesting twist to it. Miranda not only looked like a winner that night, she also scooped the award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her song "The House That Built Me".
Moving on to the rest of the outfits, just as we recover our eyes from the bling-wear, Nicole Kidman was out at the Staples Center supporting her husband Keith Urban at the Grammys, who won the Best Male Country Vocal Performance for "'Til Summer Comes Around". The Rabbit Hole actress went strapless in a Jean Paul Gaultier floral number. The body-hugging dress certainly accentuated the Aussie star's tall and slim figure. The mermaid-cut, along with the gorgeous colour-gradient and print, as well as the rosy details across her bust made the dress and Nicole absolutely stunning. She looked gorge and definitely one of the best dressed at the Grammys this year.
On the other hand, Rihanna's tiered gown doesn't seem to be working any magic for her. For me, at least. It's a great relief to see her red poodle-locks gone for good and she settled for this side-parting short hairstyle. But I wasn't a fan of this peek-a-boo Jean Paul Gaultier gown, which was too racy for my liking. But I'm just glad it was Rihanna who pulled the stunt 'cause quirky fashion actually works for her. And of course, Lady Gaga too (you'll see what she 'wore' later). Although her work "Love The Way You Lie" with Eminem lost out to Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, the Barbados babe bagged the Best Dance Recording for "Only Girl (In The World)".
Since we're on the note of eccentric outfits, Nicki Minaj displayed her daring fashion sense with a Givenchy dress plus a head-to-toe match with the leopard print. It's definitely too wild for me and there's only so many celebrities who should go over the edge on the red carpet. There just isn't enough room, but I believe Lady Gaga is the one setting the example.
Also in a quirky dress, and also by Givenchy, at the Grammys was Florence Welch. The redhead's dress features a pair of swans with a sheer layer of cloth over the shoulders and legs. The design is really unique and while I wouldn't write the look off, I think perhaps her hair could have been done or pulled back to bring out the dress even more. But definitely an interesting choice.
Ciara pulled a daring look at music's biggest night with this flowy cut-out number by Emilio Pucci. I think there's way too much skin showing (even more so than Rihanna's look) for such a glamourous event. Plus, the blowout doesn't suit the flowy skirt at all and those Givenchy heels are weighing down the whole look. Not for me. I think the runway model looked much better in the spring dress.
Jennifer Hudson was in a midnight blue Versace bustier dress with which she matched a pair of Christian Louboutin heels. The colour looked amazing on Jennifer and she's looking slimmer than ever. Her Neil Lane sparkly jewellery completed the look, matching the stones on her dress.
Julianne Hough of Burlesque was in a patterned Maladrino floor-sweeping dress, which was a really rare sight on the red carpet that night since only a handful opted for patterns. It definitely looks like spring with her blooming, colourful look with her matching lips, a Jimmy Choo clutch and diamond earrings by Bochic.
Petite beauty Eva Longoria looked so chic in a short frock by Ashi and heels by Brian Atwood. The gorgeous actress pulled the dual-tone look together with a Sergio Rossi clutch and a pair of statement earrings revealed by a pulled-back ponytail. I think Eva looked stunning that night and it appears she has been taking posing lessons from Victoria Beckham.
Kelly Osbourne who did some Fashion Police duties at the Grammys was sweet in a lilac ruffled frock by Tadashi Shoji. She looked lovely and I'm glad she wasn't in something black. She needs to venture more with colours. They're making her fair complexion glow. Kelly finished up her look with Alexander McQueen silver peep-toes that are completely studded with crystals. Keri Hilson also showed off her legs in a short number by Basil Soda. I love the shade of blue on her mini-dress, but the whole outfit would've been better if the singer had traded her silver strappy heels for gold ones to match the embellishments on her dress and her Judith Leiber clutch. It's a cute look, but perhaps a little too cute for the glamorous night.
Jazz singer Esperanza Spalding, who shocked the world when she beat teen-sensation Justin Bieber to clinch the Best New Artist award, didn't seem to look so impressive on the red carpet. She wore a ruffled lime green dress with some lilac-coloured pumps (huh?) - very confusing for me, along with that afro she pulled up so high. For those of you who don't know who she is, like myself, you just need to know President Obama has personally handpicked this singer to perform for him once.
Justin Bieber also didn't quick look like a winner on the red carpet with his seemingly oversized D&G tuxedo. And I know it's some symbol of some sort for him, but I think he should ditch the giant sneakers when strutting on the runway. It's just awful and doesn't work with any suit. And it's mind-boggling to see him in something so grown up and yet the footwear spells "teenager" all over. So do you wanna grow up or not? (FYI, Justin didn't manage to bring home any trophys)
I almost mistook John Mayer for Johnny Depp when I saw him in this look, making me think for a minute what low-profile Johnny Depp could have been doing at a music event. The resemblance is uncanny - just check out the aviators and the beard/goatee!
And I shall end off with Lady Gaga's grand entrance to the Grammys...........
